An educator will invite you to meet their students and share your unique experiences. You can give insights, career guidance, life lessons, and tips to motivate and inspire the students. This helps them make informed decisions about their future.
Similar to a TED Talk or informal interview, you will generally be asked to speak for 8 - 10 minutes. There will usually be other business volunteers present who will also speak, followed by a lively Q&A session where students are able to ask a variety of questions.
You can expect the full event to last around one hour.
How should I prepare?
While we ask teachers to send additional details to help you prepare, in most cases you shouldn’t need to spend a great deal of time putting materials together. That’s because the most successful careers talks involve sharing your own story and speaking from the heart about how your career has developed. Some things you might want to cover include:
What inspired you to choose their career path
Subjects you studied and how these are relevant now
Your failures and successes
What your company does and why this is important
What you enjoy most about your career
Skills currently relevant in the jobs you are doing now
Students are curious to hear about the highs and lows of your career journey, and what you enjoy most about what you do. It would also be helpful to mention what you thought you might do at their age, the skills you look for in new hires, and how this might relate to what they are studying in the classroom.
What impact will a Careers and Job Event have?
By sharing insights, lessons, and tips to motivate and inspire students you can help them to make informed decisions about their future. Students hear from real-life role models who can demonstrate the relevance and connection of what is taught in the classroom - because they are creating the jobs right now!
This also allows students to gain an understanding of what different careers actually entail while bringing the curriculum to life.
The goal of Careers and Job event is to equip students with the inspiration and information to make better-informed decisions about their future career paths.
